The Korona Hotel in Miskolc is getting a revival thanks to TSPC Group’s plans
The renovation and expansion of the MCC Miskolc Korona Hotel is carried out according to TSPC Group’s plans, creating an innovative talent centre with event space, a teaching area, student accommodation and catering facilities.
In 2021, the Mathias Corvinus Collegium Foundation purchased the listed building complex of the former Korona Hotel. The building opened in 1894 and played a major role in the hospitality and tourism of the city of Miskolc, but was closed in 1987. The building is a prominent national monument which has been in a state of severe neglect is getting modernised for the first time.
The renovation of the existing listed building has been designed to revitalise functions that have been important in the history of the city of Miskolc and the building, so that the hotel, café and restaurant, which enjoyed considerable prestige in the 20th century, can be revived. Likewise, the wing, which served as a key venue for Miskolc’s cultural life, will include the existing, but dilapidated, ornate ground floor great hall and the large upstairs ballroom, once used as a film theatre. The reconstruction of the listed parts will create a venue suitable for large-scale events to meet the needs of today. The existing building stock will be expanded with new wings which will accomodate the educational and event space of the talent centre.
The new functions to be created in the Korona Hotel after renovation and expansion:
- Restaurant and café: the restaurant, connected to the pedestrian street and the inner courtyard, will be revitalised
- Events and conference centre: the restoration of the historic halls will enable the building to once again host events for 500+ people
- Student accommodation and guest house: 50+14 rooms will be created to accommodate 80 students
- Lecture halls, auditoriums and community spaces to accommodate large audiences will be created in the new educational building
- Interior courtyard: in addition to the seasonal use of the restaurant, the interior courtyard will be landscaped over a large area, with a spectacular view in all seasons
Environmental awareness and the need for sustainability have been a priority during the design. The energy demand of the building has been simulated to reduce operating costs. Part of the energy needed to run the building will be provided by renewable energy sources. In addition to the use of rainwater, the building will focus on water saving solutions, the use of environmentally friendly materials, landscaping and tree planting. The use of natural, environmentally friendly materials on the internal cladding of the building were a key element, along with the preservation of the building’s values during reconstruction.
Some parts of the existing building will be reconstructed in accordance with the conservation criteria, while other parts will be covered with new, sophisticated, easy-to-clean tiles.
Thanks to the implementation of the plan, Miskolc will regain its iconic building as a new educational, talent management, tourism space and open event centre within a few years.
TSPC Group’s portfolio includes several educational complexes, such as the new Koltai Jenő Sports Centre at the University of Physical Education, and several tourism buildings, such as Hotel Dorothea, which was opened in the second half of 2023. Among the previous renovation tenders announced by MCC, TSPC Group’s design for the renovation of the Aranybika Hotel in Debrecen won an honorable prize.
