The entire area of Szent János Hospital, covering 150,000 square meters, will be renewed in a complex, multi-year process: the design tasks have been won by one of the largest engineering firms in Hungary, TSPC. The development of the hospital, which consists of nearly 50 buildings, is a priority government project, and the people of Budapest have been waiting for its complete renewal for a long time. Partner of the consortium leader TSPC is CÉH Zrt.

“The once state-of-the-art, pavilion-shaped, hillside, terraced buildings are unfortunately in very poor condition; the client’s intention for a complete and coherent renovation is an important step for the Hungarian healthcare, says Mihály Kádár, architect, owner and CEO of TSPC. Today, there is a huge gap between the expertise and dedication of hospital staff and their work environment, and we want to alleviate this difference with the tools of architecture. Our goal is to design a modern, well-organized complex that combines the architectural heritage of St. John’s Hospital with the decent conditions of modern medicine. ”

In the area of 14 hectares, the public utility network will be completely renewed as a complex system, and the development of transport, parking and patient transport system will also be major tasks of the construction. The hospital will provide patient care during the renovation as well. St. John’s Hospital is the place of nearly one million medical appointments a year, in addition to the population of North and Central Buda, it also provides care to the residents of 125 surrounding towns.

TSPC has extensive experience in the general design of healthcare and educational buildings: their portfolio includes the soon-to-be-opened Innovation and Knowledge Center of the University of Pécs Medical School, the new Hőgyes-Schöpf-Merei Pharmaceutical Research Centre of Semmelweis University and the construction plan of Heim Pál Children’s Hospital.
